Garba-Fusion research - a research of Garba and contemporary

My journey

Hello, everyone. My name is Marta Beccatini and I am a freelance dance artist based in UK but originally from Spain with a degree and masters in contemporary dance and choreography.

I have resided in UK for many years and I consider this place my home now.

I am here to talk about my journey of my research of Garba - Contemporary fusion called Garba Fusion. Recently, I got the amazing chance of getting funding thanks to Arts Council England to develop this research and connect with the community and other professionals.

Garba is an Indian folk-dance style from Gujarat, India. Both Garba and contemporary styles such as flying-low and contact improvisation share a sense of community, often performed in circular formations, with an awareness of one's body and ach other's with continuous movement flow and groundedness.

I am interested in how these movement styles relate to each other and can be fused to create new movement languages, as no one in the sector is exploring this. It could bring different creative communities to celebrate dance styles and cultures.

What is my aim?

I want to develop my own creative voice and movement style drawing on contemporary and Garba. I will use this to continue to connect with the regional dance community through a range of trailblazing performances and workshops, to raise awareness of Garba amongst the contemporary dance world.

I intend to further my knowledge and training in Garba dance, push myself creatively to develop a pioneering new movement vocabulary and dance solo, and to find opportunities to share my new practice, raise awareness and celebrate Garba.

I will be taking Garba classes with Garbaflow in Harrow and contemporary intensive workshops with OUDance festival in Milton Keynes. This will give the chance to connect with many people and artists and share my ideas.

While in India, I will take Garba classes with Swaroop Dance Academy and attend nine days Navratri Festival.
