Garba-Fusion research - a research of Garba and contemporary
My journey
On 1st of February, I had the incredible opportunity to conduct my first workshop, along with a solo performance, at Donatella's Contemporary School of Dance in Bedford. The students were unfamiliar with this folklore, so it was wonderful to introduce it to them for the first time.
I began the class by presenting 5 minutes of my solo, focusing on the more folkloric section. Then, I taught the class and displayed some footage of traditional Garba dance to give them an understanding of what traditional Garba is.
We began the class with a warm-up, introducing elements of Garba for both the upper and lower body. We focused on travel movements and the traditional foot patterns used in Garba, emphasizing a sense of groundedness and expansion. Additionally, we practiced in pairs and as a group, delving into more traditional Garba.

Feedback...
Lovely feedback from the school and principal Donatella Greco:
'The students at Donatella's Contemporary School of Dance thoroughly enjoyed the Garba Fusion workshop led by Marta. We loved exploring the rich cultural aspects of the dance, especially the vibrant energy and expressive movements. The footwork and circular patterns were especially fun to learn, as they allowed us to feel connected to the rhythm while building coordination and flexibility. The fusion of traditional Garba with contemporary elements made the experience even more exciting and engaging. This style benefits people by promoting physical fitness, improving balance, and offering a sense of community, as the circular movements create a feeling of unity among dancers. Overall, the workshop was a fantastic way to experience a different cultural dance style while also reaping the mental and physical benefits of movement'
Next Post....
I will be teaching to adults another class of Garba-Fusion at OU dance in Milton Keynes.
Really excited to be able to teach to more people this movement research.
Keep updated, almost there :)
Enjoying the process!
